That close friend of Rupert Murdoch and the Sun, Gerard
Coyne, has lodged a complaint with the certification officer. Coyne is
challenging the result of the Unite General Secretary election on the grounds
of 'multiple rule breaches', according to today's Guardian.
Coyne, who lost the election by 6,000 votes, maintains that
Len McCluskey and 'his staff manipulated the union’s procedures to win the
poll'. He is arguing that McCluskey's election team misused member databases,
while
denying Coyne the same facility.
How Coyne can make such scurrilous claims is quite
amazing. During the election campaign I know of scores of Unite members whose
Branches nominated Len McCluskey yet were still receiving emails, mailings and
text messages from the Coyne team.
Coyne's campaign was the most negative union election
contest that I've known. Here we have someone who purports to be a trade unionist
who supports working people being backed by the scummiest press media
imaginable, including the hated Sun.
Gerard Coyne, do the decent thing. Your brand of corrupt
trade unionism is not welcome in Unite. Shut up and go away. You are a spent
force in the labour movement.
